Chinese Language School

About us

Portland Chinese Language School was founded by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association (CCBA) in 1911.  Its 97 year history enhances and enriches both the curriculum and the school community.

The school is located at the historical CCBA building in busy Chinatown. There are fifteen classrooms as well as a second floor library, and the Portland Chinese History Museum is on the fourth floor. The main floor is home to a 200 seat auditorium. The majority of students are from the Portland and Vancouver metro areas. Currently, there are 15 teachers on the staff. Classes are held on Saturdays with Cantonese classes in the morning and Mandarin classes in the afternoon. There are 12 classes ranging from level one to level six. In addition, we also teach adult conversational classes.

Mission

The school's mission is to promote both Chinese culture and language education; we encourage inspired learning leading to responsible action through dedicated teaching, caring relationships and a challenging curriculum.

The school is a member of the Northwest Chinese Language School Association. Teachers participate in annual teaching seminars held in Seattle to share new ideas and enhance the communication and cooperation with other Chinese schools.

What we offer?

The curriculum design focuses on strengthening the students' ability to listen, speak and write Chinese. The teaching methods concentrate on raising students' interest in Chinese learning. The teaching materials are more than assigned Chinese textbooks, but also supplemental materials compiled and well selected by the teachers.

Classes are for both children and adults - traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese.
